The Vernon Hills Fire Department and Vernon Hills Police Department were initially dispatched to a smoke investigation, smoke filling the house at 821 Faulkner Place in Vernon Hills at around 8:38 PM Sunday night. Dispatched was Engine 412 and Battalion 41.

Upon arrival of the Vernon Hills Police, they reported smoke was filling the residence. Shortly after arrival of the fire department, Battalion 41 requested the structure fire upgrade. This brought in Libertyville, Mundelein, and Lincolnshire Fire Departments. Soon after that, command reported a working fire and requested the Full Still alarm.

Around 30 minutes later, command requested a change of quarters Box Alarm, the building department, and utilities. A full Box Alarm assignment was then requested to the scene. Red Cross was then eventually also requested to the scene by Battalion 41. At around 10:42 PM, command struck out the Box Alarm assignment and companies were still working on the scene.
