The Zion Police Department was involved in a fatal officer involved shooting this afternoon at around 2:00 p.m. at Galilee Ave & 24th St. The Zion Fire Department was requested to transport one person who was shot during the shooting. They transported to Vista East Hospital in Waukegan where the subject who was shot later died.

Police were called for an argument or fight according to the Chicago Tribune in the 2300 Block of Gilead Ave. A person fled as soon as police arrived, and police chased him on foot, heading south from where they were initially sent, according to the police release. ABC7 is reporting the police officer had witnessed the person who he was chasing with a weapon. The officer shot the suspect two times in the back according to the report. The officer provided aid to the victim right away while the fire department was dispatched. Later at the scene, the police did recover a handgun.

A perimeter was setup right after the shooting happened for the additional suspect(s). Police were also having trouble with crowds near the shooting scene.

It does not sound as if any police officers were injured, but the officer who shot the suspect was taken to the hospital as a precaution according to the Chicago Tribune.

ABC7 reported the subject who was shot by the police was a teenager, but the identity has not yet been released by the police officially. ABC7 news also reported the suspect who was shot is Justin Howard, a 15 or 16 year old (not confirmed yet with police). The Lake County Sheriff assisted as well as the Lake County Major Crime Task Force at the scene.
