Man arrested for attempting to rob two Waukegan banks

( — A 68-year-old Waukegan man has been arrested and charged with the attempted armed robberies of two local banks.

On March 22 at approximately 1 p.m. officers from the Waukegan Police Department were dispatched to the area of the TCF Bank in the 900 block of N. Green Bay Road for a man with a gun.

Police were provided a description of the suspect by concerned citizens, and the wanted man was spotted by officers a few blocks from the TCF Bank.

After a short foot pursuit the man, identified as Connie Downey, who has an address in the 300 block of Lake Street in Waukegan, was taken into custody. The gun was recovered and discovered to be fake.

Upon further investigation it was determined that the suspect went in the TCF Bank with the fake gun in his hand. He then turned around and left the bank. Once he exited the bank concerned citizens called the police and he was eventually apprehended.

Downey is also a suspect in the attempted armed robbery of the Associated Bank on March 21.

The Waukegan Police Department relinquished custody of Downey to the FBI. Downey has been charged with one count of attempted armed robbery and one count of intent to commit bank larceny. No money was taken in either incident.

Downey appeared Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Chicago. wrote this article
