A woman was in critical condition but is now stable after her vehicle was struck by a Metra train Sunday in Round Lake Park.
The crash happened at around 11:00 a.m. after a vehicle traveling westbound on Route 134 near Porter Drive was struck by a Metra commuter train bound for Chicago, according to Chief George Filenko of the Round Lake Park Police Department. An eyewitness reported the vehicle going airborne.
The occupant was extricated from the car by firefighters from the Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District and was transported to Advocate Condell Hospital in Libertyville in critical condition.
According to an update from Advocate Condell Hospital, they reported that the victim is a 58-year-old female from Round Lake. They updated her condition from critical to stable condition. She suffered head and chest injuries.
The Round Lake Park Police Department requested the assistance of the Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT).
No injuries were reported on the train.
Police said that an investigation will continue to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash.
“We are thankful that the victim survived such a tremendous impact,” Police Chief George Filenko said in a statement.
The roadway has since been reopened.
