The Wauconda Fire District responded late Sunday night to a garage fire that left one firefighter injured.
At around 11:58 p.m. firefighters were called to the 400 block of Grand Blvd for a report of a structure fire.
Crews arrived and found smoke and fire from a detached garage. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire in under half an hour, according to a statement released by the Wauconda Fire District.
One firefighter was taken to the hospital for a medical evaluation.
The estimated loss from the fire is $20,000. Investigators have determined the cause of the fire to be discarded fireworks in a garbage can.
Wauconda Fire District was assisted by Countryside, Round Lake, Mundelein, Nunda Rural, and Lake Zurich Fire Departments.
“The fire district reminds everyone not to use fireworks as they are not only dangerous, but illegal in Illinois,” officials said in a statement Monday.
“The number of structure fires goes up tremendously this time of year due to the use of fireworks nationwide.”
