The man in a motorized wheelchair that was fatally struck by a vehicle last Saturday in unincorporated McHenry has been ID’d by the coroner.

The man who was wheelchair bound has been identified to be William Roy Schmidt, 62, of unincorporated McHenry, McHenry County Coroner Anne L. Majewski said in a statement.

A 2016 Subaru Forester was heading east in the 700 block of Ringwood Road at 1:24 p.m. last Saturday when it struck the motorized wheelchair, according to the McHenry County sheriffโ€™s office.

Schmidt was transported to Centegra McHenry Medical Center where he was pronounced at 2:35 p.m., according to McHenry County Coroner Anne L. Majewski.

The driver of the Subaru, a 65-year-old man, was taken to Centegra Hospital in McHenry with minor injuries, according to the sheriffโ€™s office. There were no passengers in the vehicle.

Ringwood Road was closed from Memory Trail to Meadow Hill Lane for six hours because of the crash.

Both the man in the wheelchair and the driver of the Subaru were wearing their seat belts, according to the sheriffโ€™s office.

An autopsy performed Monday revealed that Schmidt died from blunt force trauma to the chest and extremities.

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash. The driver of theย Subaru is cooperating with the investigation, sheriff officials said.

The crash remains under investigation by the McHenry County Sheriffโ€™s Department Accident Investigation Unit and the McHenry County Coronerโ€™s Office.
