A large chemical leak prompted a hazmat response which brought in fire departments from around Lake and McHenry counties to a building in Antioch Monday evening.
The Antioch Police and Fire Departments were called to an industrial building located in the 800 block of Anita Avenue for a reported chemical leak at around 8:15 p.m.. The owner called 911 after he discovered the leak which possibly began as long ago as Friday.
Officials said that a preliminary investigation revealed an undetermined amount of an unknown industrial chemical was released on the grounds of the facility.
The Antioch Fire Department, in conjunction with the Lake & McHenry County HazMat response team was investigating the incident to determine the extent of the leak.
Fire officials say that there is no risk to the surrounding community.
Police officials said that there was no significant exposure to the Sequoit Creek, however, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency has been notified and will be investigating.
The property will remain secured by the police and fire department.
