A 28-year-old man who was killed following a 3-vehicle crash in unincorporated Richmond Friday morning has been identified by the coroner.
The man has been identified as Ernesto R. Silva, 28, of Wonder Lake.
A preliminary investigation indicated that at approximately 5:45 a.m. Silva’s vehicle, a 2004 Lincoln Navigator SUV, wasย travellingย eastbound on Route 12 east of Kuhn Road when it was observed to have drifted into the westbound lane striking a 2011 Toyota RAV4 and a westbound 2016 GMC Acadia before his car was spun around and stopped against a guardrail.
Silva was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:00 a.m. after being extricated by the Richmond Fire and Rescue.
The drivers of the Toyota and GMC were transported by Richmond Fire Protection District to Centegra Hospital โ McHenry where they were treated and remain in good condition. There were no other occupants in any of the vehicles.
An autopsy performed this afternoon by the McHenry County Coroner’s Office revealed that Silva died from injuries to his spine and aorta. Toxicology tests are pending at this time.
Airbags did deploy in each vehicle and all drivers were wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash.
It’s unknown why Silva’s vehicle crossed the center-line at this time and it remains under investigation.
Route 12 was closed for approximately 5 hours during the investigation.
The investigation is being conducted by the McHenry County Sheriffโs Office Major Crash Investigation Unit and McHenry County Coronerโs Office.
