A 31-year-old woman and a 15-year-old girl are dead and a Crystal Lake man is in custody for murder following a shooting at a Crystal Lake home Thursday night.
Police were first called to the residence in the 100 block of Marian Parkway at about 8:02 p.m. for a report of a female armed with a knife and a male armed with a handgun, according to authorities. When they arrived, they found the woman and teen with multiple gunshot wounds.
A play date at a Crystal Lake home ended traumatically for an 11-year-old boy who was forced to hide under a bed while a 31-year-old man in the home fatally shot and killed a 31-year-old woman and a 15-year-old girl, according to media reports.
Juan Viveros told CBS Chicago he was playing video games with two boys, ages 6 and 9, who lived in the residence in the 100 block of Marian Parkway, when the boy’s mother and father began to argue.
“I heard that they were fighting, and then soon I heard a scream, and then bangs,” Juan told CBS Chicago. “We didn’t know what was happening, so I just hid under (the bed).”
Police were first called to the home just after 8 p.m. on Thursday for a report of a female armed with a knife. While authorities were on their way, they learned there was also a male with a handgun at the residence.
When police arrived, they found a woman, Allania S. Yarber, 31, of Crystal Lake, and a 15-year-old female of Crystal Lake, whose identity has been withheld due to age and family request, with multiple gunshot wounds according to McHenry County Coroner Dr. Anne Majewski. NBC Chicago reports the shooting victims were relatives — possibly sisters. Police tried to resuscitate the teen and women, but both were pronounced dead at the scene.
McHenry County Coroner Dr. Anne Majewski said that the autopsies performed Friday revealed that the cause of death to both victims was the multiple gunshot wounds.
Viveros said his friends were in the locked room with him when police arrived at the scene, according to NBC Chicago. Officers told his friend “your mom and aunt have passed away,” according to the news report.
Authorities told the children they were safe and then covered their heads with blankets as they led them out of the house so they wouldn’t have to see the crime scene, according to ABC 7 news.
Police took Ryan Yarber, 31, into custody on four counts of first-degree murder in connection with the fatal shooting. A semi-automatic handgun was found at the scene. Yarber remained in custody as of Friday afternoon, according to online jails records.
Police believe the shooting is an isolated incident but did not elaborate on what may have led to the shooting.
“There is no concern for public safety at this time,” Deputy Chief Thomas Kotlowski said in a news release.
The murder remains under investigation by the Crystal Lake Police Department, McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office, and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office.
