Two women were killed after a head-on vehicle crash in Algonquin Sunday afternoon, according to the coroner.

At around 3:12 p.m. firefighters and police were called to a report of a three-vehicle crash with injuries at 902 East Algonquin Road in Algonquin between Longwood Drive and Sandbloom Road.

According to McHenry County Coronerย Dr. Anne Majewski,ย the driver of a car heading eastbound on Algonquin Road crossed the centerline striking a second vehicle that was travelling westbound.

The driver of the eastbound vehicle was taken to Centegra Hospital-Huntley where she was pronounced dead at 3:48 p.m.. The driver of the car traveling westbound who was struck head-on was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:16 p.m..

Autopsies will be conducted Monday. The identities of the two deceased women are being withheld pending notification of family, the coroner said.

Algonquin Road between Longwood Drive and Sandbloom Road was shut down for several hours but has since been reopened.

The Algonquin Police Department has not yet released any additional details.

The crash remains under investigation by the Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team, Algonquin Police Department, and the McHenry County Coronerโ€™s Office.
