A Round Lake Beach man who was wanted on a warrant ran from a hospital but was arrested after he stole a pair of pants and a sweater from a vehicle nearby, police said.
Police said that last week Matthew D. Brechel, 36, of Round Lake Beach, had been transported to Advocate Condell Hospital in Libertyville with chest pains. Police officers were called to the hospital after Brechel left the facility wearing only a hospital issued gown.
A records check showed that Brechel was wanted on a warrant for failing to appear in court on a retail theft charge out of Lake County, authorities said.
Police received a 911 call from a witness who said they saw a man in a hospital gown enter a vehicle and take a sweater and a pair of pants in the 100 block of West Austin Avenue in Libertyville.
After the man entered the vehicle the witness said that the man entered a garage in the 100 block of Coolidge Avenue, according to police.
Police officers found Brechel a short time after at the Shell gas station at Milwaukee Avenue and Park Avenue in Libertyville. He was arrested without incident.
