An elderly female sustained minor injuries after crashing her car into the Round Lake Park police station Wednesday morning.
Round Lake Park Police Chief George Filenko said that at around 10:15 a.m. a 2008 Chevy Equinox driven by an 81-year-old female jumped a curb stop and crashed into the front of the police station building at 215 East Main Street in Round Lake Park.
Chief George Filenko said that the driver sustained minor injuries but was not transported to the hospital.
“I was on a conference call when the building shook and it sounded similar to an explosion,” Chief George Filenko said.
Chief Filenko stated that the crash caused significant structural damage to the police station. An assessment by the building inspector deemed the rest of the building safe. Chief Filenko said that public works crews have installed temporary support jacks in the area affected by the crash.
“My administrative assistant immediately notified me a car had hit the front of the building. She then rendered assistance to the driver until fire and rescue arrived on the scene,” Chief Filenko said in a statement.
Chief Filenko added that, “We’re just glad no one was injured. Buildings can be repaired.”
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Round Lake Park Police Department.
