A 40-year-old man has been arrested after he reportedly sexually assaulted a child in 2003 in Waukegan, police said.

On Wednesday, members from the Waukegan Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division arrested 40-year-old Cesar Cruz on an arrest warrant for predatory criminal sexual assault of a child.

Police took Cruz into custody without incident after finding out he was in a hotel in Waukegan. Police said that Cruz was a known transient between the United States and Mexico.

The investigation began in July 2017 when the victim, who police said is now an adult, came forward and reported the sexual abuse that occurred when she was a minor, under the age of 13. The alleged crime occurred over a two-year period between 2003 and 2004 in Waukegan.

Cruz is currently being held at the Lake County Jail on a $1 million bond. He’s been charged with two counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child and two counts of criminal sexual abuse.
