A man who ran from police in a stolen vehicle and crashed, escaped police following a manhunt search in Volo Tuesday night, sheriff’s officials said.

At around 10:00 p.m. on Tuesday, a Lake County Sheriff’s deputy was on patrol in the area of West Sullivan Lake Road and Four Season Boulevard in Lakemoor. The sheriff’s deputy located a 2013 Nissan Altima driving in the area, which was reported stolen from a home in Volo on September 5.

The sheriff’s deputy tried to make a traffic stop on the vehicle but the driver refused to stop and a pursuit began. According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, because of the driver’s refusal to pull over and the risk to other motorists, the sheriff’s deputy discontinued the pursuit with the stolen car.

Authorities said that a short time later, the sheriff’s deputy came upon the intersection of Route 12 and Molidor Road in Volo and discovered a vehicle crash. A preliminary investigation showed that a 2014 Kenworth Tractor/Trailer was traveling northbound on Route 12.

The driver of the truck, a 50-year-old man of Troy, Missouri, was driving through the intersection on a green light. The driver of the stolen Nissan traveled eastbound through the same intersection, running the red light, and both vehicles crashed in the intersection, sheriff’s officials said. The driver of the truck was uninjured.

The driver of the stolen Nissan then fled from the scene on foot southbound through a wooded area. Two K-9 Teams from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office along with a K-9 Team from McHenry County Sheriff, and a K-9 Team from Palatine Police assisted in the search for the suspect.

They tracked the scent of the man for approximately one-half mile and the scent ended. The man remains at large and no further description of the man is currently available, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
