A man who robbed a grocery store at gunpoint in Waukegan was arrested by police inside an apartment building on Wednesday.

At around 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, the Waukegan Police Department responded to a grocery store in the 2700 block of Washington Street for a reported armed robbery. When officers arrived they spoke to a store employee that confirmed the store was robbed at gunpoint.

Officers were able to get information from witnesses about the suspect. A police canine was called to assist with the investigation. Officers were able to locate the suspect in an apartment in the 2800 block of Washington Street in Waukegan. Authorities said that the apartment belonged to an acquaintance of the suspect but that person was not involved in the robbery.

The Waukegan Police Department and members of the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System (NIPAS) surrounded the apartment. The suspect, Kostantino Papandreou, 23, who is currently homeless, was taken into custody without incident after coming out of the apartment, police said.

Authorities also said that a “weapon and proceeds were recovered from the incident”.

Papandreou is currently in custody at the Lake County Jail on a $2 million bond. He is being charged with one count of armed robbery, authorities said. He will appear in court again on September 18 at 9:00 a.m..

  1. Isn’t his dad currently a fugitive from justice as well? The old owner of the now defunct Jack’s Pizza and Burgers in Grayslake? I believe so…..
