A man was pronounced dead at the hospital Sunday night following a motorcycle crash in Crystal Lake.
First responders were dispatched to the intersection of Virginia Road and James R. Rakow Road in Crystal Lake at around 8:50 p.m. on Sunday for a reported accident with injuries with a motorcycle on fire.
Upon arrival, responders found a Harley Davidson motorcycle down on the ground in the intersection, along with an adult male, who has not yet been identified, with life threatening injuries.
A Flight For Life medical helicopter was requested and landed nearby at the Lake in the Hills Airport. But due to the extent of injuries, Flight For Life was unable to transport the patient. Crews subsequently transported the man to an area hospital by ambulance where he was later pronounced dead.
A preliminary investigation by the Crystal Lake Police Department’s Accident Investigation Team indicated a blue Ford Expedition, driven by a 17-year-old male from Crystal Lake, was traveling southbound on Virginia Road when he attempted to turn left onto James R. Rakow Road and struck the motorcycle in the intersection, according to a release from the police department.
The teenage driver and the four passengers in his Ford Expedition were evaluated at the scene but were not injured. The intersection, and all roads leading in, were closed for around 2 hours while crews worked.
The crash remains under investigation by the Crystal Lake Police Department and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office.
