The coroner has revealed the preliminary cause of death of a man who was pulled from the water at Crystal Lake Main Beach after falling down face first.

The Crystal Lake Fire Department, Crystal Lake Park District Police Department, and Lakewood Police Department responded to a call of a person who was pulled from the water at the Crystal Lake Main Beach at around 2 p.m. on Sunday.

The McHenry County Coroner’s Office said that Edward B. McCaffery, 59, of Crystal Lake, fell face first into the water at the beach and a bystander pulled him out.

McCaffery was pronounced dead at Centegra Hospital – Huntley at 2:53 p.m. on Sunday, the McHenry County Coroner’s Office said.

An autopsy performed Tuesday revealed that McCaffery had extensive cardiac disease, according to McHenry County Coroner Dr. Anne L. Majewski.

“It does not appear at this time that his death was due to drowning though the final cause of death is pending additional studies,” Dr. Anne Majewski said in a statement.
