A man is in critical condition after a Metra train struck his car in Lake Barrington Wednesday night.

Outbound Metra train 653 struck a vehicle at around 7:45 p.m. near Route 14 and Kelsey Road in Lake Barrington as it was going west toward the Fox River Grove train station, according to Metra and Lake County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Christopher Covelli.

The vehicle was around 100 yards southeast of the Kelsey Road crossing “in an area a car wouldn’t ordinarily be,” Covelli said. The driver reportedly was struck after getting out of his vehicle prior to the crash.

The driver was transported to the hospital in critical condition, Covelli said. The driver’s age and name have not yet been released. No one else was in the car besides the driver at the time of the crash.
