A Hawthorn Woods police officer came upon a fire while on routine patrol and helped evacuate the residents early Friday morning, fire officials said.

The Lake Zurich Fire Department and other fire departments were called to the scene in the 0-10 block of Heather Lane in Hawthorn Woods. The first fire department unit arrived at 1:04 a.m. and found a fire coming from the deck in the rear of the house.

Fire officials said that firefighters deployed a hose line from the fire engine to the rear of the house and quickly extinguished the fire. The fire did not extend into the residence and there were no injuries reported.

The Lake Zurich Fire Department was assisted by the Barrington, Countryside, Lincolnshire, Long Grove, and Wauconda fire departments. Damage is estimated at $2,000.

“The Lake Zurich Fire Department would like to remind residents that working smoke detectors save lives,” fire officials said in a statement.
