A road rage incident between a car and a motorcycle driver ended with a man getting stabbed near Waukegan on Sunday, sheriff’s officials said.
At about 7:20 p.m. on Sunday, Lake County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the area of Route 120 and Interstate 94 in unincorporated Waukegan for a report of a traffic crash. When sheriff’s deputies arrived, they located a 1999 Ford Escort in the grassy center median and a 1997 Harley-Davidson motorcycle, which had been struck by a car, officials said.
Authorities said that a preliminary investigation revealed the driver of the Harley-Davidson, Michael P. Abbinanti, 46, of the 33100 block of Mill Road in Wildwood, and the driver of the Ford Escort, Ramon Quiroz, 36, of the 1100 block of Shoreline Court in Round Lake Beach, had previously been in a traffic altercation. The altercation began in the area of Route 120 and Fairfield Road near Round Lake.
Sheriff’s officials said that as both drivers approached Interstate 94, Quiroz drove his vehicle into the grassy median and stopped. Abbinanti parked his motorcycle on the side of Route 120 and approached Quiroz. An altercation began and Abbinanti stabbed Quiroz several times with a knife.
Quiroz was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Authorities also said that during the altercation, Abbinanti’s motorcycle was struck by a passing vehicle.
Abbinanti was arrested and charged with three counts of aggravated battery (class 3 felonies). At a court hearing on October 2, Abbinanti’s bond was set at $30,000. Abbinanti posted bail and was released from the Lake County Jail. He is next due in court on November 1 at 1:30 p.m. in courtroom C-120.
Quiroz was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol (class A misdemeanor). He is due in court on November 15 at 9:00 a.m. in courtroom C-404.
