The man who was in critical condition after a Metra train struck his car in Lake Barrington on September 27 has died, the medical examiner said.

Outbound Metra train 653 struck a vehicle at around 7:45 p.m. on September 27 near Route 14 and Kelsey Road in Lake Barrington. The train was travelling northwest toward the Fox River Grove train station, according to Metra and Lake County Sheriffโ€™s Office Sgt. Christopher Covelli.

The vehicle was around 100 yards southeast of the Kelsey Road crossing โ€œin an area a car wouldnโ€™t ordinarily be,โ€ Covelli said. The train struck the car and the car then struck the man, who was already outside of his car prior to the crash.

The driver was transported to the hospital in critical condition, Covelli said. No one else was involved in the crash besides the driver.

On Monday, the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office said that the man, identified asย James A. Wagner, 78, of Barrington Hills, had died nearly two weeks after the incident.

Lake County Sheriff’s Sgt. Christopher Covelli said the incident remains under investigation.
