Nine people were injured, including four children, after a car crashed through a restaurant in Waukegan on Saturday.
The Waukegan Police Department and Waukegan Fire Department responded to Toluca’s Mexican Restaurant at 1419 Washington Street in Waukegan at around 12:30 p.m. Saturday for a report of a car that crashed into the building.
When first responders arrived they found a 2015 Chevrolet Traverse that crashed into the building. In total, nine people were injured, including four children.
Among the seven victims inside the restaurant, one child was transported to Lake Forest Hospital in critical condition, two adults were transported to Advocate Condell Hospital in Libertyville also in critical condition, and the other four victims inside the restaurant were transported to Vista East and Vista West Hospitals in Waukegan with minor-to-moderate injuries, fire officials said.
The two people in the SUV were an elderly female driver, identified as Constella Turner of Waukegan, and a young child passenger, police said. Both of them were transported to an area hospital with non-critical injuries.
Turner was issued citations for improper backing and reckless driving. She is scheduled to appear in court on November 27 at 9:00 a.m. in Park City, police said.
Surveillance video at the restaurant showed the SUV driving in reverse and sharply turning and then slamming into the building without slowing down. Officials did not comment on what caused this to occur.
The Beach Park, Gurnee, Lake Villa, and North Chicago fire departments assisted the Waukegan Fire Department at the scene.
The restaurant will be closed for at least a week while repairs are done to the building.
