A man wanted for beating his wife was arrested when he returned to their home, then killed himself by hanging in a jail cell at the Waukegan Police Department, police officials said.
On Saturday at around 2:30 p.m. the Waukegan Police Department was called to the 1700 block of Kayla Lane in Waukegan for a domestic dispute. When police officers arrived they spoke to the 911 caller that told them her husband, Aaron Chilcutt, 40, of Waukegan, had returned to their home.
Authorities said that husband also had a warrant for his arrest that was issued on October 6 for two counts of domestic battery and one count of aggravated domestic battery. The warrant carried a $40,000 bond.
Officers went into the apartment and arrested Chilcutt without incident. He was taken to the Waukegan Police Department’s lock-up facility where he was being held for bond court the next morning.
Later that night at around 6:00 p.m., Chilcutt was found unconscious in his jail cell. He was transported to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan where he was pronounced dead.
On Monday an autopsy was performed on Chillcut. Lake County Coroner Dr. Howard Cooper said that the preliminary results showed his death was a suicide by hanging. The toxicology results are pending.
The Illinois State Police responded to the Waukegan Police Department that evening to conduct an investigation into the death, authorities said.
