A Waukegan man is in custody after a 30-year-old man died after being shot in unincorporated Grayslake early Saturday morning, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
Lake County Sheriff’s detectives and Major Crime Task Force investigators obtained an arrest warrant for Jasperin F. Melendez, 19, of the 1100 block of West Grove Avenue in Waukegan, on Saturday. The arrest warrant was for first degree murder, which is a class X felony and carries a $5,000,000 bond.
Sheriff’s detectives and the Major Crime Task Force located Melendez in Milwaukee, Wisconsin Sunday night at a fast food restaurant drive-through in the 600 block of East North Avenue. Melendez remains held in the Milwaukee County Jail pending an extradition hearing.
Lake County Sheriff’s deputies and firefighters/paramedics were called to the 33300 block of North Lone Rock Road in unincorporated Grayslake for a report of shots fired on Saturday at around 1:35 a.m.. Sheriff’s deputies arrived and found a 30-year-old Zion man shot and critically injured. The man was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office said that this was not a random shooting. The Lake County Coroner’s Office had an autopsy scheduled on the 30-year-old Zion man for Monday morning.
