A man who was trapped inside a house fire in Marengo was rescued by police officers and airlifted to the hospital Monday evening.

Police and firefighters were called at 10:14 p.m. Monday night for a report of a house fire in the 700 block of East Grant Highway, according to the Marengo Police Department.

Authorities said that the resident, a 54-year-old man, was airlifted to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood after being rescued from the burning home by three police officers. Fire officials said the man was in critical condition when Flight For Life transported him.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Marengo Fire Department. Damage is estimated at $10,000 to $20,000.
