A Zion woman was struck and killed by a vehicle in a hit-and-run in Zion Tuesday night, police said.
The Zion Police Department said that at 5 p.m. on Tuesday a vehicle traveling northbound Lewis Avenue struck and killed a pedestrian walking in the 2200 block of Lewis Avenue, near 23rd Street.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office has identified the victim as Latatia Shepard, 47, of Zion. An autopsy Wednesday confirmed that Shepard died from multiple traumatic injuries consistent with being hit by a car, Lake County Coroner Dr. Howard Cooper said.
Police said that the crash was first reported by a passing motorist at 5:17 p.m., but they do not know when the accident actually happened.
This is the second fatal hit-and-run in Zion in less than three weeks. The first one happened on October 21 when two men were walking along Green Bay Road near 9th Street when they were both struck by a vehicle who then fled the scene. One of the men died and the other was injured but survived.
