Charges are pending against an Antioch man after he fled the scene of a fatal crash in Antioch, sheriff’s officials said.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office, Antioch Police Department, and Antioch Fire Department responded at 1:37 a.m. on Sunday to a vehicle crash with injuries near Route 59 and Grass Lake Road in Antioch Township. When sheriff’s deputies arrived they found two vehicles with major damage.

Authorities said that a 2015 Chevrolet, driven by a 26-year-old woman of Youngtown, Arizona, was traveling northbound on Route 59 south of Grass Lake Road. A 2007 Volvo, driven by a 41-year-old man of Antioch Township, was traveling northbound behind the Chevrolet.

As both vehicles proceeded northbound, the driver of the Volvo rear-ended the Chevrolet, for an unknown reason, causing both vehicles to lose control, police said. Both the Chevrolet and Volvo left the roadway and each struck a tree. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit.
