A drunk driver died and her passenger was injured after they crashed into a light pole in Waukegan last Thursday, police said.

The Waukegan Police Department and Waukegan Fire Department responded on November 23 to Belvidere Road and Lewis Avenue at 6:30 a.m. for a report of a single-vehicle crash.

Investigators said that the vehicle, a four-door sedan occupied by two people, was traveling northbound on Lewis Avenue at Belvidere Road when it struck a light pole.

The female driver, identified as 31-year-old Maria Castillo of Zion, was transported to an area hospital where she was pronounced dead. Investigators said they do not believe she was wearing her seat belt and that alcohol played a factor in the crash.

The passenger of the vehicle, a male in his twenties who has not been identified, was transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries where he was treated and released. Investigators believe he was wearing his seat belt.

Lake County Coroner Dr. Howard Cooper confirmed on Monday during an autopsy on Castillo that she died from multiple blunt force injuries from the crash. Toxicology results are pending.
