A Waukegan man has been charged with DUI after he was seriously injured in a crash near Avon Township early Monday morning.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office was called at 3:20 a.m. on Monday to a report of a car crash with injuries on Rollins Road west of Route 45 in Avon Township. Sheriff’s deputies arrived and found a Jeep Grand Cherokee with major damage, according to sheriff’s officials.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office said that the Jeep, driven by Raquel Vazquez-Cordada, 32, of the 600 block of Clarke Avenue in Waukegan, was driving eastbound on Rollins Road at a high rate of speed. He lost control and drove onto the south shoulder of the roadway, striking and severing a utility pole, which caused major damage to the Jeep.

Vazquez-Cordada, who was the only person in the vehicle, was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville in critical condition.

Authorities said that Vazquez-Cordada was driving under the influence of alcohol. He has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving without insurance, and driving without a valid driver’s license. Vazquez-Cordada is scheduled to appear in court on January 17.

The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit.
