A woman has died at the hospital after being rescued by firefighters from a car submerged in water following a two-vehicle crash in North Barrington that left three others injured.

The Lake Zurich Rural Fire Protection District and the Lake County Sheriff’s Office was called at 5:58 p.m. on Sunday to the area of Route 59 south of Route 22 in North Barrington for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries.

When sheriff’s deputies arrived, they located two vehicles with extensive damage, including one which was partially submerged in water west of the roadway, sheriff’s officials said.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office said that a Toyota Corolla, driven by a 63-year-old female of Arlington Heights, was traveling northbound on Route 59 south of Route 22. A Toyota Highlander was traveling southbound on Route 59 in the same area.

The driver of the Corolla lost control and traveled into the southbound lanes of traffic, striking the Highlander, which was driven by a 55-year-old male of Round Lake Beach. The Corolla then drove off the west side of the roadway into a wetland area and was partially submerged in the water.

Firefighters rescued the driver from the Corolla and a passenger, identified as 86-year-old Mary F. Paulik of Lake Barrington. Paulik was transported to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge with critical injuries where she died Tuesday morning. The driver was transported in serious condition to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington.

The driver of the Highlander was transported to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, along with the passenger, a 55-year-old female of Round Lake Beach.

The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit.
