A 20-year-old McHenry man was arrested on Friday after a crash on Tuesday left a Wonder Lake man dead.

Eduardo Jose Figueroa-Martinez, 20, of the 4400 block of West Ramble Road in McHenry, was charged with aggravated DUI / reckless homicide (class 2 felony) and aggravated DUI without a valid driver’s license (class 4 felony).

The McHenry Township Fire Protection District, McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and McHenry Police Department were called at 12:21 a.m. on Tuesday to the 6900 block of Route 120 in McHenry for a report of a single-vehicle crash with injuries.

First responders located the crash on Route 120 between Wonder Lake Road and Ringwood Road. A newer model Ford sedan, driven by Figueroa-Martinez, had sustained heavy damage after crashing into a telephone pole.

Firefighters and paramedics located two victims, Figueroa-Martinez and a 22-year-old man, identified as Wonder Lake resident Jose Luis Ortiz Reyes. Ortiz Reyes, who was the passenger, was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at 12:55 a.m. at Centegra Hospital – McHenry.

Figueroa-Martinez was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The road was closed for investigation for several hours and re-opened at 4:40 a.m.

The McHenry County Coroner’s Office said on Wednesday that an autopsy performed on Ortiz Reyes revealed that he died from blunt trauma to the chest and abdomen. Toxicology testing is pending.

Police said that Figueroa-Martinez was taken into custody after he was released from the hospital. He is scheduled to appear in court on January 2.
