Thirty chickens and several alpacas died after a barn fire in Mettawa on Tuesday, the Libertyville Fire Department said.
Firefighters were called at 1:12 p.m. to a barn fire at a farm property at 14060 West Old School Road near the Tri-State Tollway in Mettawa. Fire officials said that several horses, cats and goats escaped from the barn but thirty chickens and several alpacas died in the fire. No humans were injured.
Fire investigators have not yet determined the cause of the fire, which destroyed the 40-foot by 40-foot barn. Firefighters from several surrounding towns were called to the scene.
West Old School Road between St. Marys Road and Bradley Road was closed while fire crews battled the fire.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office is assisting the Libertyville Fire Department with the investigation.
