A McHenry man is facing sex abuse charges after police said he inappropriately touched a child under the age of 13 on two separate occasions.

James J. Barnard, 58, of the 1800 block of West Kerry Lane in McHenry, was charged with three felony counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a victim under the age of 13 and three misdemeanor counts of domestic battery.

Court records show that the Lake in the Hills Police Department filed a complaint on January 19 against Barnard alleging he sexually abused a victim under 13 on November 1 and November 28.

Barnard was bonded out of jail after a family member posted $2,000 on Saturday, the Northwest Herald reported. Hank Sugden, Barnard’s defense attorney, said that Barnard suffers from a traumatic brain injury but could not comment further because it is too early in the case, the Herald reported.
