A 49-year-old man is dead and another man was critically injured after a fully engulfed house fire in Lake in the Hills on Sunday.

The Huntley Fire Protection District and numerous other fire departments were called at 3:49 a.m. to a house fire at 10 Newbury Court in Lake in the Hills. Crews arrived and found a home fully engulfed in flames.

Two men, Mike Laing and Chris Laing, were inside the house during the fire. Both of the men suffered critical injuries and were flown by Flight For Life to OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford. Chris Laing was later pronounced dead at the hospital. Mike Laing was stabilized and “opened his eyes a few times,” according to a GoFundMe.

Two dogs died in the fire, according to the GoFundMe page. The fire was brought under control at 4:47 a.m. and the house was deemed uninhabitable.

The Huntley Fire Protection District and the Office of the State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
