The Lake County Sheriff’s Warrants Team broke through an attic wall during a warrant to arrest a barricaded man who later attacked a police dog.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Warrants Team and U.S. Marshals arrested Matthew T. Heidbrick, 27, of the 25700 block of North Gilmer Road in unincorporated Mundelein, during a warrant on Thursday.

Heidbrick was wanted on a failure to appear arrest warrant for unlawful possession of a controlled substance, sheriff’s officials said.

Police found Heidbrick hiding in an upstairs attic at his residence. He refused multiple requests to surrender and leave the attic, sheriff’s officials said. He then retreated further into the attic and barricaded himself.

“Deputies breached the wall in the area Heidbrick was hiding. He still refused to surrender. Sheriff’s Canine Dax was deployed and assisted in the apprehension effort,” Lake County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Christopher Covelli said.

Heidbrick was arrested and transported to a local hospital where he received treatment for the dog bite. He has since been released and remains held in the Lake County Jail where he is being held on additional charges of striking a police animal, resisting a peace officer and obstructing a peace officer.
