A Waukegan man has been charged with murder after police said he shot and killed a North Chicago man following an argument last week.

Andre G. Jones, 34, of the 1700 block of Longview Road in Waukegan, was arrested on March 7 and charged with two counts of first-degree murder.

North Chicago police were called at 12:51 a.m. on March 5 for a report of shots fired near Green Bay Road and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in North Chicago. Waukegan police were called shortly after that to a report of a person shot near Lewis Avenue and Catalpa Street in Waukegan.

The Lake County Major Crime Task Force said that Waukegan police officers found 29-year-old Melvin DeVost II from North Chicago who had been shot.

Police said that DeVost and Jones got into an argument at a bar in the 2200 block of Green Bay Road in North Chicago. DeVost got into a car as a passenger after the altercation and Jones opened fire on the vehicle striking DeVost, officials said.

The driver of the vehicle tried to rush DeVost to a nearby hospital; however, his vehicle broke down near Lewis Avenue and Catalpa Street and he called 911.

He was transported by ambulance to Vista Medical Center East where he was pronounced dead. The Lake County Coroner’s Office confirmed during an autopsy that DeVost died from his injuries sustained after being shot.

Jones appeared in court on March 11. He remains held in the Lake County Jail on a $3 million bond. He is scheduled to appear back in court again Monday afternoon.
