Jacob T Powell, 29, of the 3000 block of Belvidere Rd in Waukegan

A wanted felon is in custody after hitting a Waukegan police car and running from police officers before being bitten by a police canine.

Jacob T. Powell, 29, of the 3000 block of Belvidere Road in Waukegan, was wanted for unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, aggravated fleeing a police officer and possession of a defaced firearm.

On Monday, U.S. Marshals and the Waukegan Police Department surrounded Powell while he sat inside his vehicle in the parking lot of the Red Roof Inn at 3031 Belvidere Road in Waukegan.

Powell was told by police to get out of his vehicle but he put the car in reverse and hit a Waukegan police car before then driving forward over a concrete curb and onto the grass.

Powell continued and drove through Gurnee where he ended up losing control of his car because of a flat tire near Grand Avenue and O’Plaine Road. He got out of the car and ran from police. Lake County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Diesel found the man hiding under a deck. He refused to come out from under the deck and K-9 Diesel apprehended Powell, sheriff’s officials said.

Authorities said the man was transported to an area hospital where he was treated and released into police custody. He is currently being held on a $300,000 bond in the Lake County Jail.

Police obtained a warrant and searched his hotel room at the Red Roof Inn where they found drugs.

Powell faces additional charges of resisting a peace officer, obstructing a peace officer, two counts of unlawful possession of a controlled substance, two counts of intent to deliver, two counts of delivery of a controlled substance within 500 feet of a school, possession of a weapon by a felon, damage to state supported property, driving on a revoked license and driving with no insurance.

He is scheduled to appear in court again on April 4.
