A 50-year-old Gurnee man is in critical condition after a semi-truck struck his broken down car on the side of the road in unincorporated Libertyville.

Emergency crews responded at 10:40 a.m. on Monday to Route 137 & North Center Avenue in unincorporated Libertyville for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries. Police arrived and found a car with extensive damage after a semi-truck struck it from behind, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office said.

Officials said that a 2000 Mack semi-truck pulling a gravel hauler, driven by a 51-year-old Round Lake Beach man, was traveling westbound on Route 137 when it struck a 2017 Mitsubishi Lancer that was stopped in the westbound lanes.

The driver of the Mitsubishi, a 50-year-old Gurnee man, was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville in critical condition. According to a woman who knows the victim, the victim is currently on life support, she told Lake and McHenry County Scanner.

The Mitsubishi was stopped in the roadway because of a flat tire, authorities said. The victim was inside the car when it was struck by the semi-truck.

No arrests have been made and no citations have been issued, sheriff’s officials said. The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
