Thomas T. Chapman, 48, of Winthrop Harbor

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office said that a wanted Winthrop Harbor man stabbed himself in the chest when police were closing in on him during a warrant on Tuesday.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office and U.S. Marshals tried to arrest Thomas T. Chapman, 48, of the 700 block of Franklin Avenue in Winthrop Harbor, on Tuesday. The man was wanted for escape and domestic battery, sheriff’s officials said.

However, when police spotted Chapman inside the residence, he disappeared down a hallway. Police made entry into the residence and found the man unresponsive on a bed. Authorities said he stabbed himself in the chest more than once.

Police administered first aid and an ambulance was called to the scene. Chapman was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville for treatment. He was treated and released into police custody.

He currently remains held in the Lake County Jail where he is being held without bond. His next court date is April 19.
