A pedestrian was fatally struck by a Metra train Tuesday morning in Barrington, causing heavy delays, authorities said.

The Barrington-Countryside Fire Protection District and Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded at 5:50 a.m. Tuesday to a report of a pedestrian struck by a train near Route 14 and Hart Road in Barrington.

Emergency crews confirmed a person, who has not yet been identified, was struck and killed by a Metra train. Police have not released any additional details.

A Metra spokesman confirmed inbound Union Pacific Northwest train #606 struck the pedestrian. Heavy delays were reported and service was limited. As of 9:45 a.m., Metra trains on the Union Pacific Northwest line were running with delays in excess of 100 minutes.

The incident is under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
