A major police presence continues around an Antioch home late Wednesday morning after authorities said that a driver rammed a police car and fled during a traffic stop.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office said that Antioch police were called to a report of a suspicious white Volkswagen at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday. The driver rammed into an Antioch police squad car during the traffic stop and then sped away.
Officials said that someone in the vehicle may have also fired a gunshot during the incident; however, no injuries were reported. The vehicle was later found in the 40500 block of North Route 83 in Antioch. A major police presence was seen around the house as authorities setup a perimeter.
Police said that some people have come out from the residence but not the person police are looking for.
Authorities asked the public to stay away from the scene. “All District 34 schools have gone into a soft lockdown because of a situation occurring at the intersection of Route 83 and Grass Lake Rd,” Oakland Elementary School said around 9:45 a.m.
Lake Villa District 41 schools were also put on lockdown. Officials said that there is no risk to the kids at the schools.
The Metra North Central Service was impacted because of the incident. Metra said at 9:50 a.m. that inbound and outbound trains were not operating past Lake Villa. As of 11:50 a.m., Metra said that trains are delayed 30 to 40 minutes but are operating.
Route 83 remains closed between Grass Lake Road and Beach Grove Road.
