16-year-old Angel Sedano

Officials announced on Monday that the body recovered from Lake Michigan near Waukegan has been identified as missing Gurnee teen Angel Sedano.

Emergency crews were called Saturday evening at 10:30 p.m. for a search of a missing person near the Waukegan Municipal Beach. The search was called off due to poor conditions after about two hours, fire officials said.

On Sunday morning at 9 a.m., the Waukegan Fire Department and Waukegan Police Department resumed the search along with units and equipment from fire departments in Lake and McHenry counties. Divers located Angel Sedano, 16, of Gurnee, two hours later.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office confirmed on Monday that the body was Sedano. He went missing on Saturday.

An autopsy performed on the boy showed that the cause of death was drowning, and no foul play was suspected, according to Lake County Coroner Dr. Howard Cooper.

“Our deepest condolences go out to the Sedano and Carranza families. This is certainly a terrible tragedy,” Dr. Cooper said.

The Waukegan Police Department and Lake County Coroner’s Office continue to investigate the incident.
