A North Chicago man is facing charges after police say he sexually abused a 16-year-old girl in Libertyville last month.
The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) notified the North Chicago Police Department on May 10 about a complaint of sexual contact between a 16-year-old girl and Rakim Smith, 21, of North Chicago, Libertyville Police Sgt. Jeff Stolzenburg said.
The Libertyville Police Department began investigating on May 23 after the North Chicago Police Department learned that the sexual abuse occurred in Libertyville, Sgt. Stolzenburg added.
Libertyville police investigators interviewed Smith at the North Chicago Police Department on June 2 while he was in custody for an unrelated case. He admitted to investigators to having sexual contact with the 16-year-old girl. Six counts of criminal sexual abuse were then approved by the Lake County Stateโs Attorneyโs Office, authorities said.
Smith was transported to the Libertyville Police Department where he was processed and released back into the custody of the North Chicago Police Department to face charges in his other unrelated case. He is scheduled to appear in court again on July 20.
