A Bartlett man and woman have been indicted on federal charges for robbing banks in Gurnee, Aurora and Ottawa in May using a stolen AK-47.

James D. Williams, 41, and Alexis T. Handelman, 21, both from Bartlett, Illinois, were indicted on federal charges in U.S. District Court by a grand jury in June.

Williams was arrested on May 31 and Handelman was arrested on June 18.

The two were charged with robbing the NorStates Bank at 5384 Grand Avenue in Gurnee on May 21, the Old Second Bank at 323 East Norris Drive in Ottawa on May 11, and the Aurora Bank and Trust at 2287 West Galena Boulevard in Aurora on May 31, the FBI said.

In total, the duo took almost $150,000, according to court records. The two rented cars, including the pictured Nissan Rogue above, for the robberies and Williams stole an AK-47 and another gun in March and May, authorities added.

Williams and Handelman face up to 20 years in prison for each charge they are convicted on. The two remain held in custody.
