A Gages Lake man has been charged after police say he robbed a man and punched a police dog near unincorporated Libertyville.
Lake County Sheriff’s deputies were called to the Doe’s Motel, 31228 Route 45 in unincorporated Libertyville, on July 1 at 3 a.m. for a robbery.
Police spoke with the victim, a 25-year-old Mundelein man, who told them that he was approached by a man asking for money. When the victim gave the man money, the man grabbed more money from the victim’s hands and ran away, sheriff’s officials said.
The victim chased the suspect but then stopped and called 911. Lake County Sheriff canine Dax was called to the scene to help search for the suspect. The suspect was tracked to the backyard of a nearby home.
Authorities said that Chester A. Biggs Jr., 39, of the 33000 block of North 2nd Avenue in Gages Lake, ignored police commands and tried to flee by climbing a fence in the backyard.
Canine Dax bit and apprehended Biggs; however, he punched the dog while he was being taken down.
Biggs was transported by ambulance to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville for treatment to his leg from the dog bite. It is unknown if canine Dax was injured.
Biggs was transported to the Lake County Jail after being released from the hospital and charged with robbery, theft, criminal damage to property, resisting a peace officer and striking a police animal.
Biggs is being held in the Lake County Jail on a $50,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court again on August 1.
