A motorcyclist is dead after being struck by a Jeep near Wadsworth Wednesday afternoon, sheriff’s officials said.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office was called at 2:15 p.m. Wednesday to a car that struck a motorcycle at Kilbourne Road and Route 173 in Newport Township.

Lake County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Christopher Covelli said that a 1999 Yamaha Motorcycle was traveling southbound on Kilbourne Road approaching Route 173. A 2008 Jeep Compass, driven by a 69-year-old woman from Gurnee, was traveling northbound on Kilbourne Road also approaching Route 173.

The driver of the Jeep made a left turn at the intersection in front of the motorcycle, Sgt. Covelli said. The motorcycle collided with the vehicle and the driver of the motorcycle was ejected.

The man, who has not yet been publicly identified, was transported to St. Catherine’s Medical Center in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the Jeep was not injured.

The intersection of Kilbourne Road and Route 173 will remain shutdown until around 6 p.m. Wednesday while the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit continues to investigate.
