Motorcyclist killed after driving off road, striking tree near Antioch

A man was killed early Friday morning after driving his motorcycle off the road and striking a tree in unincorporated Antioch.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office and Antioch Fire Department was called at 5:15 a.m. Friday to Grass Lake Road and Kathryn Drive in Antioch Township for a report of a motorcycle down.

Police found a 1999 Honda Motorcycle on the east side of the roadway but no driver. Following a brief search, emergency crews found a Lake Villa man, who has not yet been publicly identified, dead in the tree line near the motorcycle.

Lake County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Christopher Covelli said that the motorcycle was traveling eastbound on Grass Lake Road just south of Kathryn Drive when it left the roadway for an unknown reason.

The motorcycle struck a tree and the driver was ejected. The man was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene.

An autopsy is being scheduled by the Lake County Coroner’s Office. The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit.

This is the second fatal motorcycle crash in Lake County in three days. A motorcyclist was killed after being struck by a car at Kilbourne Road and Route 173 in Newport Township on Wednesday.
