A Waukegan man is in custody after police say that he fired eight shots from a 9mm pistol while driving near Independence Grove Forest Preserve in Libertyville Saturday evening.

Lake County Sheriff’s deputies were called at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday to the area along Route 137 by Independence Grove Forest Preserve for a report of someone shooting a gun from a moving vehicle.

Lake County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Christopher Covelli said that a 911 caller reported that the driver of a red Toyota, later identified as Sergio Hurtado-Vega, 31, of the 100 block of Philippa Avenue in Waukegan, was shooting a gun while driving down Route 137.

Lake County Sheriff’s deputies and North Chicago police officers were able to stop the vehicle near Green Bay Road and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in North Chicago. Police took Hurtado-Vega into custody without incident.

Sgt. Covelli said that it was determined that Hurtado-Vega fired eight rounds from a 9mm pistol.

He was charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, which are both felonies. He remains held in the Lake County Jail on $250,000 bond. Hurtado-Vega is next due in court on August 1.
