Kenneth E. Martell, 36, who was wanted for a homicide, was identified as the man shot and killed by a Lakemoor police officer Thursday morning.
The Lake County Major Crimes Task Force said that a Lakemoor police officer was on routine patrol at around 5 a.m. and came across an occupied SUV on a narrow gravel road near Four Seasons Boulevard & Sullivan Lake Road.
The police officer stopped the vehicle and made contact with Martell, who is from Meadville, Pennsylvania. A struggle ensued after the man pulled a gun.
A backup officer arrived and Martell pulled out a second gun, officials said. Police then shot the man and he was pronounce dead at the scene.
The two officers were not injured but they were transported to the hospital for evaluation.
The Lake County Major Crimes Task Force said that Martell was wanted for a homicide that occurred in Crawford County, Pennsylvania earlier this week after he allegedly stabbed and killed an 88-year-old man during a robbery.
Lake County Coroner Dr. Howard Cooper said that an autopsy showed that Martell died from a gunshot wound to the face. Toxicology results are pending.
Police continue to investigate the shooting.
