A car driving on Route 41 in Lake Forest burst into flames after driving underneath a semi-truck trailer, trapping the driver inside the car late Friday evening.
The Lake Forest Fire Department was called around 10 p.m. Friday to the southbound lanes of Route 41 north of Old Elm Road in Lake Forest for a report of a car that drove under a semi-trailer truck.
When fire crews arrived, they found the car on fire underneath the trailer of the semi-truck and the driver of the car trapped inside. Firefighters extinguished the fire and worked for over an hour to extricate the driver from the car.
A Lifestar medical helicopter was called to the scene and landed in the northbound lanes of traffic. The victim was transported to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge in critical condition.
Northbound lanes of Route 41 were briefly shutdown while the helicopter landed at the scene and southbound lanes were shutdown for several hours while police investigated the crash.
The Lake Forest Fire Department was assisted at the scene by the Deerfield-Bannockburn, Highland Park and Northbrook fire departments.ย The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team.
